Tupac Art Inspiration – Project Tupac

In this edition of Tupac Art Inspiration we speak to 21 year old Romanian artist, Iulian, who has created some amazing artwork. We spoke to this self-taught artist about Tupac inspiration, digital drawings and his future in art.

O4L Online: Iulian, welcome and thank you for talking with O4L Online. Can you tell us some more about yourself and your passion for art?

Thank you for this opportunity to talk with O4L Online. I’m 21 years old and live in Romania studying economics. I have a passion for art ever since I could remember. I used to draw as a kid a lot but I had some breaks from drawing too. A few months ago I took a job and there I realized that I can draw and do something with this. I quit the job and started watching tutorials and drawing all day long. It just makes me free my head of thoughts, someplace where I can go and it’s just me.

O4L Online: We saw a time-lapse video on social media that showed just how much detail goes into your art. Can you tell us about the process of creating such amazing artwork?

Actually, that time-lapse showcased my first ever digital drawing. As shown in the time-lapse, it doesn’t work from the first time so I have to make adjustments along the way. The process is that I start drawing what I see and do my best. Also, my style is jumping from one thing to another and leave it unfinished and then comeback, it’s messy. Being the first digital drawing, it was the first time using the Procreate app so I didn’t know how to use all tools. I guess it’s in my nature to want to bring small details. Being the first time drawing on a tablet I wanted it to be with Tupac.

O4L Online: You have drawn many celebrities including Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and Tupac. Out of all the sketches you have done, have you got a favorite?

Definitely Tupac, the last drawing of ‘Pac is my favorite, there’s no doubt. I mean, I drew many celebrities but some are just sketches where I spent like one hour. But my last drawing of Tupac is one of the best I did. Even though I think it could be done better. I always have this feeling after I finish a drawing, that it could be done better.

O4L Online: Seeing your Tupac art, it is hard to believe they are drawings, they look so realistic. What made you want to draw Tupac and what has the reaction been?

In my opinion, they’re not so realistic but I’m aiming for that and I know that with hard work I will get there. Ever since I first heard Tupac I loved him and I always draw what I love. But lately, I’ve been researching much more into Tupac’s life and music to find out more about him. This wasn’t my last Tupac drawing. I have some good ideas and as I become better with digital drawing, I hope I can come out with some good Tupac artwork.

O4L Online: Tupac is considered by many to be the greatest rapper of all time. Can you remember the first time you heard ‘Pac’s music and how did it make you feel?

I am one of those who thinks he is the GOAT. As a kid, I had a friend older than me who was listening to rap music and I’m pretty sure I heard ’Pac’s music for the first time then. In 2012 I listened to Eminem’s ’Not Afraid’ and that was the point that got me into rap music. And through Eminem’s music, I start listening to Tupac. I think the first song I heard from ‘Pac was ’Ghetto Gospel’ and I remember it was like goosebumps all over me. Of course, I knew Tupac before but when I was listening Ghetto Gospel I was like ’holy, this is so dope’ and I remember I stopped what I was doing and just listened to the lyrics.

Of course, it went on repeat and from there I started listening to more of his songs. I searched him on Google and started learning about him. That was the time when I saw his movies one after the other. He accomplished so much by age twenty five, it’s just amazing. I am twenty one and I can’t say I did something great but him, multi-platinum albums, six movies, one of the best selling music artist, it’s amazing.

O4L Online: You have a bright future ahead of you. Do you have any plans that you might want to share with us?

I don’t have any plans, I just want to draw and see where it takes me. I’m still trying to find my style in art so I don’t have like any big plans.
