The Time Tupac Called Busta Rhymes Explaining His Actions

Busta Ryhmes spoke about the memorable moment when Tupac Shakur took the stage and Mic literally, from Tribe Called Quest at 1994 The Source Awards.

Appearing on Angie Martinez ‘Untold Stories of Hip Hop‘, Busta Rhymes shared a story of how Tupac called him personally to explain his actions that night at The Source Awards.

Also appearing on the episode was Lil Cease, member of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and childhood friend to the Notorious B.I.G. Untold Stories of Hip Hop airs every Thursday night via WETv.

“Me and Omar Epps and Tupac was staying at the same fully furnished apartment complex,” Busta Rhymes said. “There was Source awards happening in New York before it was being televised. So, Pac went out there and you know he had to perform at The Source awards show.”

“So, Tribe had won Group of the Year award, and they was making their acceptance speech. Whoever the production person that was on stage, they pressed Tupac’s DAT tape, in the middle of the Tribe acceptance speech,” Busta explained.

Seconds later Tupac appeared on stage with twelve of his entourage, as he performed an unreleased song titled ‘Out on Bail’. Everyone in attendance was shocked, including Biggie Smalls who was sitting with the audience that evening.

Tribe Called Quest was angered by the interruption of their acceptance speech, but Tupac Shakur made it clear to Busta Rhymes that he didn’t do it intentionally.

“Pac called me immediately,” Busta Rhymes said. “He called me because he wanted to get in touch with Q-Tip and he knew I was the link. So, he explained to me what happened and he needed Q-Tip to know, that he had nothing to do with the timing of when he was being forced to perform.”

“He wanted to personally tell Q-Tip that he was apologetic. They super squashed it. Everything was super good.”
