Via the official Roc Nation Instagram, Jay-Z releases a strong statement after speaking with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and the announcement of Keith Ellison appointed as lead prosecutor.
“This is just a first step. I am more determined to fight for justice than any fight my would-be oppressors may have,” Jay-Z said in the statement released late Sunday Night. The statement came after earlier in the day, Governor Walz revealed that he had a heart-to-heart conversation with the Hip Hop icon.
“It was so incredibly human,” Tim Walz told FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul. “He knows the world is watching, and how Minnesota handles this is going to have an impact across the country. It’s a positive sign that someone of a stature, that has a presence like that, is focused in the moment of what Minnesotas are focused on.”
According to the statement, Jay-Z asked Governor Walz to do the right thing and call in Attorney General Keith Ellison to take over the George Floyd case.
“After out very earnest conversation, thank you to Governor Walz for doing what’s right and calling in Attorney General Keith Ellison to take over the George Floyd case. Earlier today, Governor Walz mentioned having a human conversation with me – a dad and a black man in pain. Yes, I am human, a father and a black man in pain and I am not the only one. Now I, along with an entire country in pain, call upon AG Ellison to do the right thing and prosecute all those responsible for the murder of Geroge Floyd to the fullest extent of the law. This is just a first step. I am more determined to fight for justice than any fight my would-be oppressors may have. I prevail on every politician, prosecutor and officer in the country to have the courage to do what is right. Have the courage to look at us as humans, dads, brothers, sisters and mothers in pain and look at yourselves.”Sean “Jay-Z” Carter
By Sunday afternoon, Tim Walz had announced that Ellison had been appointed as lead prosecutor in the case. Ellison spoke to CNN where he stated the importance of not rushing the case. “We are moving as expeditiously, quickly and effectively as we can,” Ellison told CNN. “I need to protect this prosecution. I am not going to create a situation where people can say this was a rush to judgment.”
Ellison has also stated that the other three officers involved in the murder of George Floyd will be held accountable. “We are reviewing the evidence, and we are reviewing the law, and we are going to charge this case in a manner consistent with the highest level of accountability that the facts and the law will support,” Ellison said to MSNBC Monday morning June 1st. “I can assure you that we’re taking a fresh look at this.”
