Jada Pinkett Smith On Her Friendship with Tupac and Her First Big Break

MTV News caught up with Jada Pinkett Smith at her California home to talk about her rise to stardom, her friendship with rapper/icon/legend Tupac Shakur, and how he helped her get her first big break.✨

Jada and Tupac has always been a topic for discussion as they’re friendship has been well documented. MTV News interviewed Jada Pinkett Smith exclusively via her California home. Speaking about her rise to stardom, she couldn’t go any further without mentioning a her dear from Tupac Shakur.

Jada tells MTV News about her very first role she got thanks to Tupac, “I got Menace II Society through Tupac. Tupac was a part of Menace II Society first and he was the one that put me on. He was the one that called the Hughes brothers and was like, “You gotta meet my homegirl Jada.”

“He called me, and was like, “I’m part of this movie, I really think you’d be great for this role.” So I went and I met them. We clicked and so I got the role,” explains Jada Pinkett Smith.

“So I’m thinking oh, me and Pac are gonna work together for our first movie, right? Of course, Pac has a falling out, you know wit The Hughes Brothers,” says Jada.

It is no mystery as Tupac and Allen Hughes have history. History that resulted in an altercation and Tupac spending 15 days in jail. Tupac at the time was suppose to be in the movie Menace II Society , but was angered when he was fired by the Hughes Brothers. This lead to Tupac feeling the Hughes brothers had disrespected him and claimed he put his hands on the Hughes Brothers.

Jada showing her loyalty to her long time friend thought about quitting the role to be in Menace II Society. “I was like well, if yore not doing it, I’m not doing it. He was like, “Nope not playing that game.” You need to do this film and that was my first real break,” says Jada.

With Tupac’s 48th Birthday just a few days ago, the world still talks and thinks about the icon. Including Jada. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about him. I think about him every single day,” says an emotional Jada Pinkett Smith.
