Earlier this Thursday morning, January 23, Eminem addressed criticism his new album has endured since its surprise release.
Eminem addressed all the “gentle listeners” via his social media accounts with a screenshot of typed letter signed by Marshall Mathers himself. “In today’s wonderful world murder has become so commonplace that we are a society obsessed and fascinated by it. I thought why not make a sport of it and murder over beats? So before you jump the gun, please let me explain. This album was not made for the squeamish. If you are easily offended or unnerved at the screams of bloody murder, this may not be the collection for you,” Eminem starts the letter.
“Certain selections have been designed to shock the conscience, which may cause positive action. Unfortunately, darkness has truly fallen upon us. So you see, murder in this instance isn’t always literal, nor pleasant. These bars are only meant for the sharpest knives in the drawer. For the victims of the album, may you rest peacefully. For the rest of you, please listen more closely next time,” a sympathetic Eminem closet out his letter.
Just as previous Eminem albums, “Music To Be Murdered By” touches on sensitive topics. Topics such as the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing on the song “Unaccommodating”. Plus the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas on lead single “Darkness.”
“People start to show up, time to start the show up / It’s 10:05 PM and the curtain starts to go up / And I’m already sweatin’, but I’m locked and loaded
/ For rapid fire spittin’ for all the concert-goers / Scopes for sniper vision, surprise from out of nowhere / As I slide the clip in from inside the hotel,” spits Eminem on the gun control conscious single.
