Drake made history as the first and only artist to hit 50 billion combined streams on Spotify.
The news doesn’t come as a surprise because the Hip Hop star Drake repeatedly dominated end-of-year streaming lists. The popularity of chart smashes like One Dance, Hotline Bling and In My Feelings, while 2018 single God’s Plan boasts more than 1.67 billion hits alone on Spotify. Spotify confirmed that the 34-year-old Canadian native reached this incredible feat this week. Hearing the news, Future congratulated Drake on social media platform Twitter. He wrote: “50 billion streams SHEESH congrats to the boy.”
Although Drake racks up some doubters, nobody can take away from the numbers his hits make. The 2016 smash hit One Dance is the platform’s most-played song ever, with 1.97 billion streams, while 2018 single God’s Plan has 1.67 billion plays alone. Drake released the album Scorpion on June, 29, 20018 and set a one-day global record for album streams. It hit 132,450,203 million plays in its first day of release, 50,000,000 more than the previous record. Furthermore, Drake became Spotify’s most-streamed artist of the 2010s, with Eminem, Ed Sheeran and Post Malone following behind. Apart from 2019, Drake became the most-streamed every year since 2015 according to Alpha Data.
In a 2013 in-depth interview with GQ Magazine, Drake spoke about the legacy of his music and how he intends to make history. “I feel this great responsibility to see how far can we take it,” he said. “How out of reach can I set that bar for whoever comes after. While I’m here, I’m gonna keep pushing that bar higher and higher up and make you really work for it.”
With the upcoming release of Certified Lover Boy this month, Drake will only add to his success.
