De La Soul Talk Tupac On Drink Champs

De La Soul were guests on the Drink Champs podcast recently on which they detailed the disagreement with Tupac.

On the show hosted by N.O.R.E. De La Soul briefly touch on Tupac and clear up the confusion.

Hailing from Long Island, New York, De La Soul consists of Posdnuos, Trugoy and Maseo. Releasing their first album in 1989, they are established in the hip-hop world.

Tupac Not Feeling Ego Trippin

The background to the ‘beef’ came when De La Soul released the video for their 1994 song ‘Ego Trippin’. The video appeared to be mimicking Tupac’s 1993 hit video ‘I Get Around’ taken from Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.

Ego Trippin is from De La Soul’s third studio album Buhloone Mindstate. The track and accompanying video take shots at the luxury lifestyles portrayed in music videos. From the cars and women to jewellery and mansions, the video took a swipe at it all.

Tupac saw the Ego Trippin video and took it as the New York group as dissing him. According to De La Soul’s Posdnuos, ‘Pac reached out to them after seeing the video. The video shows a bald-headed guy wearing a gold chain with his shirt off, similar to ‘Pac’s video. Not only that, they are in a white mansion, just like the I Get Around music video.

The Aftermath Of Ego Trippin

This sparked a series of disses from ‘Pac aimed at De La Soul. In a number of tracks, he aims lyrics their way, including Against All Oddz and Watch Ya Mouth.

N.O.R.E. brought the subject of Tupac up in the recent Drink Champs podcast. The group recall by Tupac taking the video as a diss and dissing them, it caught them by surprise.

Recalling the situation with Tupac, Posdnuos said, “It started from the video for Ego Trippin. We’re in this mansion, making fun of ourselves in terms of playing off having an ego”.

Tupac’s manager contacted Tommy Boy to let them know that ‘Pac feels they are dissin his video. Immediately, De La Soul let Tupac’s manager know that wasn’t the intention and tried to reach out to ‘Pac. They agreed that if given the chance they would apologize to ‘Pac for the way the video came across.

Posdnuos also mentions that he had run into ‘Pac’s sister, Sekyiwa, at the airport in Atlanta a few years ago. She told him that Tupac loved De La Soul and was a big fan but their video hurt him.
