Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez recently spoke with Ariel Helwani on ESPN’s the MMA show, speaking on his WWE contract and Brock Lesnar.
For Cain, this was a long time dream, “It was something that I wanted to get into. The WWE is the pinnacle of pro wrestling. Something that I was always looking forward to. Always was my ultimate goal.”
Staying in character Velasquez says this all started with Brock Lesnar’s actions towards Rey Mysterio and Rey’s son Dominic. “From that man I just had it. Then Brock going in just thinking he could beat people up where ever he can. Hell no.”
Cain would make his WWE debut on Smackdown debut on Fox. Earlier this year, WWE and Fox agreed to a five year billion dollar deal, that brought Smackdown to Fox.
During the debut, Cain was able to get his hand on the new WWE heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar.
For Cain this isn’t enough, he wants his “dream match” against Brock. Cain wion’t have to wait long, as he and Brock will face off at WWE’s Crown Jewel event. Crown Jewel has become an annual PPV located in Saudi Arabia, and will air on October 31at 1pm ET via the WWE Network.
WWE Crown Jewel
WWE has been widely criticized for their partnership with Saudi Arabi. Most of that criticism stemmed from the heinous crime committed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where an innocent U.S. journalist was killed.
Saudi’s cultural and religious beliefs have also been an issue with fans and WWE’s wrestlers who disagree with not including the woman of the WWE to participate in the Crown Jewel PPV. Something that contradicts the WWE’s “woman revolution”, where female wrestlers have been given equal spotlight in the ring. Top stars like John Cena and Daniel Bryan have refused to participate in the PPV.
Many hard core wrestling fans are also disappointed and have felt the WWE has sold out to the old mighty dollar that is being handed to them to bring top matches to the Crown Jewel PPV. Last year so the return of Shawn Michaels for one last match, that many long time fans couldn’t witness first hand.
Cain Vs. Brock Part 2
And, here we are now, once again, another big time match. Brock vs. Cain, for the first time in a WWE ring. But, for Cain Velasquez he cannot wait, “This is a match that I wanted. I cannot wait to get my hands on him, for all that he’s done.”
Frist time in a WWE ring, but not the first time these two will face off. Back in 2010 Cain vs. Brock was centered stage at the Honda Center for UFC 121. Cain would go on to defeat Brock, leaving Brock in a bloody mess.
Cain Velasquez negotiations with the WWE would only take a couple of days. The contract is an exclusive deal which allows Cain to only perform within the WWE. According to Cain, the WWE has also giving him the green light to compete at one of the AAA Lucha Libre shows.
Now as part of the WWE roster, Cain has retired from MMA, but doesn’t count out a return in the future. “I will never say never as far as will I ever go back to MMA. I love MMA.”
No word yet on whether Cain will be a full time WWE superstar like Ronda Rousey or if he will have a limited schedule like Brock Lesnar. For the moment Cain is focused on getting better and is up to anything that is needed from the WWE. “I’m just really focusing on getting better. Knowing the sport in and out, and just getting better all around in this sport. that’s my goal. I mean I’m down to do whatever match,” explains Cain.
