BBC Radio 1Xtra has announced plans for 1Xtra Summer 2020, a nine-week celebration of black music and culture.
Launched in August 2002, BBC Radio 1Xtra showcases the best of British black music. Over the years, experienced Hip Hop DJs like Tim Westwood and Charlie Sloth have had slots on the channel. At this time, after 18 years on air, BBC 1Xtra remains the UK’s only black music radio station.
1Xtra Summer 2020 will run from July 3 to August 31, and will bring new live performances, artist takeovers and DJ playlists to 1Xtra. Every weekend in July the channel will dedicate to a different theme. These will include Hip Hop, Classic Clashes, Back to the Islands and Africa.
For fans of live music who’ve been unable to attend events, 1Xtra Summer 2020 will certainly be welcomed. Commissioning Executive at BBC 1Xtra, Janine Kempadoo, suggested that they’ve stepped this year’s efforts up have and stressed that there will be a happy, party vibe. “It feels so necessary at the moment to bring our listeners together for the ultimate summer party feel, with good vibes and even better music,” Kempadoo said.
In addition, 1Xtra’s own DJ Target is particularly looking forward to the summer. “1Xtra Summer 2020 feels more special and more necessary than ever before. We’ve really tried to be that uplifting energy for our audience in these challenging times,” DJ Target said in a statement. “This year we are going bigger with our summer content. From Festival moments and themed weekends right through to Carnival Vibes, we have some super exciting plans, and can’t wait to share them with everybody.”
